Bond Vigilantes Make Their Votes Known in Europe

"There is a significant disconnect between the every person has a vote doctrine of representative government and the blunt collective power of money and markets. Most of the time this disconnect is hidden and doesn’t really matter. In times of crisis, as we have seen in Europe, it can become the only thing that matters, overshadowing coalition governments, parliamentary squabbles, constitutional prohibitions and all the rest."

Film Noir

"The noir narrative confronts the protagonist with a rift in the familiar order of things or with a recognition that apparent normality is actually the antithesis of what it seems to be: it is brutal rather than benign, dehumanised not civilised. In the course of the story, it becomes clear that the things that are amiss cannot be dealt with rationally and cannot ultimately be put to rights."

Stanley Kubrick, Filmmaker

Strangelove was a film where much of its impact hinged on the dialogue, the mode of expression, the euphemisms employed. As a result, it's a picture that is largely destroyed in translation or dubbing.

2001, on the other hand, is basically a visual, nonverbal experience. It avoids intellectual verbalization and reaches the viewer's subconscious in a way that is essentially poetic and philosophic. The film thus becomes a subjective experience which hits the viewer at an inner level of consciousness, just as music does, or painting."

The Lucid Dreamer - Malcolm Godwin

"The lucid world is so rich, incredibly detailed, and alive, that the normal, everyday appearance of the waking realm can seem almost a flat monotone by its side. For not only is the dreamworld as clear and spatially real as anything in our waking state, but it also can be experienced with all the five senses, including taste and smell."

Mark Zuckerberg of Facebook on the next wave of music companies

Regarding the next wave of music companies:

"They believe that the key to making the music business work isn't trying to block you from listening to songs you haven't bought. It's trying to help you discover so many songs that you end up buying even more content than you ever would have otherwise. "

Ice Trapping Ice

Ice Trapping Ice, originally uploaded by Bryan Hansel.

Recently, a southernly snow and wind storm pushed lots of pack ice to our shores. At Paradise Beach, which is northeast of Grand Marais, the pack ice froze fast to the shore. At places the thick ice extends out over 50 yards. I found this great ice gully capturing sheet ice broken up by a slight Lake Superior swell. It was 0F when I took the photo. Brrrr.
